About Catwalk Falls

Peak Rivulet and its tributaries on the northern side of Adamsons Peak are truly laden with waterfalls, but unfortunately less laden with tracks through some of the worst scrub you are likely to find anywhere. Nontheless, given the relatively short distances horizontally it is possible to access some of the waterfalls close to the road, albeit with extreme difficulty. The closest of these is Catwalk Falls, a spectacular 35 metre waterfall that lies in total obscurity, unnamed and not even marked on maps. The name Catwalk Falls is derived from the large fallen log that lies along the creek below the falls, which forms a "catwalk" leading right up to the waterfall from 50 metres downstream.

To reach Catwalk Falls, look for the "Peak Spur 5" Forestry road off Peak Rivulet Road, and park at a locked gate a few hundred metres along. From here, it is a 5km walk or (ideally) bike ride to the end of the road, passing a nice roadside falls (Peak Spur Falls) along the way. It is here that the proper hike begins, and you are greeted with a wall of cutting grass that quickly turns into horizontal scrub to negotiate. The first 50 metres are by far the hardest of the walk, though it doesn't get a whole lot easier deeper in either. To cover the 400 metres as the crow flies to the falls from the road took us 1 hour 15 minutes, and the negotiating of obstacles meant the total route was 800 metres each way according to our GPS measurements.

Catwalk Falls is just one of 10 waterfalls that could theoretically be explored in the area, but just making it this far is a serious endeavour in itself, though the falls are more than an adequate reward for effort.
